May 2017, International Fair Trade Month.
As part of International Fair Trade Month, retailers around the world promote Fairtrade products in their stores in May.
There are over 121 businesses in Barrie that sell Fairtrade products. Peter Sullivan of Fair Trade Barrie delivered display materials to some of these stores. The above photos were taken in Nutrition Plus on Dunlop St.
May 20th, 2017 The Barrie Public Library Celebrated Fair Trade Month.
May is International Fair Trade Month and the Barrie Public Library celebrated with free coffee all morning on Saturday May 20th.
Fair Trade Barrie was on hand to promote the Fair Trade movement and the availability of products in Barrie.
Fairtrade coffee, tea and snacks are sold daily in the library’s coffee kiosk in the library foyer.
May 11th, 2017, Innisdale Secondary School Qualified as Canada’s 16th Fair Trade School.
Barrie’s Innisdale Secondary School has qualified as a Fair Trade School.
The project was initiated by the Grade 12 students in the Equity and Social Justice Class taught by teacher Eleanor Alexander and then adopted by the school’s Social Justice Club supervised by teacher Tracey Aylesworth. Students celebrated by wearing giant banana costumes, organizing Fair Trade displays in the hallways and serving Fair Trade coffee, tea and hot chocolate.
April 28th, 2017 Fair Trade at the Cosmic Coffee House.
Twice per year the MacLaren Art Centre hosts a coffee house to provide an opportunity for young Barrie musicians to show off their talent.
Guests and musicians are encouraged to wear costumes and this year’s theme was science fiction characters.
Fair Trade Barrie was on hand to help celebrate and handed out Fairtrade bananas courtesy of Equifruit, and Cadbury Fairtrade chocolate bars.
April 2nd, 2017, Aware Simcoe hosted Dr. Dianne Saxe, Environmental Commissioner of Ontario.
Dr. Saxe reviewed her recent report "Facing Climate Change" that confirms again that our environment is changing.
Fair Trade Barrie was invited to supply the coffee.
March 23rd, 2017, Innisdale Secondary School Teacher Appreciation.
The Innisdale Social Justice Committee has for some time provided coffee for their teachers on the morning after parent teacher interviews. This occurs twice a year. This year a switch was made to use Fair Trade coffee.
The event was assisted by Ms. Eleanor Alexander, Teacher, Social Science & Humanities Department
March 6th, 2017, Barrie Grandmothers hosted Photojournalist Paola Gianturco.
The Barrie Grandmothers and Grandothers chapter of the Stephen Lewis Foundation gathered to listen to Photojournalist Paola Gianturco who talked about the Grandmother movement that is now active in 15 countries. The local Grandmothers chapter is headed by JoAnne O'Shea.
Fair Trade Barrie was invited to supply the coffee.
Feb. 4th 2017, Barrie Winterfest Pancake Breakfast at Central United Church.
Excellent turnout kept everyone busy all morning.
