2008 International Fair Trade Weeks (May 1st — 15th, 2008)
Fair Trade Weeks is celebrated during the first two weeks of May,
throughout the world, to bring attention to social injustice in developing
countries.
Again this year, organizations in Barrie organized activities to
promote this event. Listed below were some of the local activities.
- Friday May 2nd & Saturday May 3rd, Georgian
College, Human Condition Series Conference. Fair Trade Information
Table provided.
- Sunday May 4th, 7:30 pm, Hurnonia Symphony Concert
at Collier St. United Church. Free Fair Trade coffee supplied courtesy
of Starbucks.
- North West United Church. Fair Trade coffee and
information table available after service.
- St. Joan Of Arc Secondary School launched the
supply of Fair Trade coffee only in school cafeteria and staff room.
- BFTWG addressed Barrie City Council, Monday May
5th. The Mayor, councilors, council visitors and TV viewers received
a brief presentation on Fair Trade, Fair Trade Weeks and local Fair
Trade events.
- Starbucks, Essa Rd. brewed Café Estima Fair
Trade coffee from May 5th to May 11th.
- Saturday May 10th, Timothy's World Coffee, Georgian
Mall. An information table was set up in the main concourse of Barrie's
largest shopping mall. Fair Trade coffee 25% discount on regular
size cup 8 am till noon.
- Saturday May 10th, Barrie Public Library. Free
Fair Trade coffee at the Kozlov Café and information table,
9 am till noon.
- Sunday May 11th, St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Fair Trade coffee and information table after Mass.
- Barrie Central United Church. Fair Trade coffee
and information table available after service.
