2007 Events
With the objective of growing Fair Trade sales faster in Barrie,
Ontario than the national average growth, the Barrie Fair Trade Working
Group committed themselves to a minimum of 24 events (2 per month)
in 2007. To date these have been as follows:
- January 6th , Nutrition Plus Natural Foods,
42 Maple Ave. Barrie, Ontario. Free cups of Cameron's Peruvian Blend
Coffee were served from 8:30 am till noon. Lots of Fair Trade talk
and Fair Trade brochures handed out.
- January 18th, Georgian College Film Night. Coffee
Demo. Free cups of Kicking Horse, Kick Ass Coffee served and Fair
Trade brochures handed out from 6:30 pm till 9:00 pm
- February 4th, Holy Spirit Parish, Launch of Fair
Trade Coffee sales, Alternative Grounds, at the new Catholic parish
at the south end of Barrie.
- February 15th, Georgian College Film Night. Free
cups of Kicking Horse, Kick Ass Coffee served and Fair Trade brochures
handed out from 6:30 pm till 9:00 pm
- February 16th, North Collegiate Coffee House.
Local high school invites BFTWG to their coffee house. Fair Trade
coffee is served. Lots of Fair Trade talk.
- March 11th, Fair Trade Coffee sales, Alternative
Grounds, at the new Holy Spirit Catholic parish at the south end
of Barrie.
- March 15th, Georgian College Film Night, "An
Inconvenient Truth" Free cups of Kicking Horse, Kick Ass Coffee
served and Fair Trade brochures handed out from 6:30 pm till 9:00
pm
- April 12th, Georgian College Film Night. Free
cups of Kicking Horse, Kick Ass Coffee served and Fair Trade brochures
handed out from 6:30 pm till 9:00 pm
- April 14th, Nature's Best Natural Food Market,
7 Glenwood Dr. Bayfield Mall. Free cups of Kicking Horse, Kick Ass
Coffee were served from 8:30 am till noon. Lots of Fair Trade talk
and Fair Trade brochures handed out.
- April 20th, Barrie North Collegiate, Fair Trade
seminar to 20 staff and students organizing the upcoming "Students
Effecting Change" Conference.
- May 5th, MacLaren Art Centre Coffee Demo. The
Radio café in the MacLaren Art Centre serves Fair Trade coffee
year round. On May 5th, to promote Fair Trade Fortnight, the café
offered to give away free cups of Mountain View Estates Fair Trade
coffee. The BFTWG supported the event with brochures, posters and
lots of Fair Trade talk.
- May 12th, Barrie Public Library Coffee Demo.
The Kozlof café in the Barrie Public Library serves Fair Trade
coffee year round. On May 12th, to promote Fair Trade Fortnight,
the café offered to give away free cups of Madison County, Fair
Trade coffee. The BFTWG supported the event with brochures, posters
and lots of Fair Trade Talk.
- May 18th & 19th, Laurentian University, Barrie
Campus, Human Condition Conference. Fair Trade coffee and brochures
were made available to approximately 100 students with WUSC (World
University Service of Canada) who attended this conference.
- May 22nd, Students Effecting Change Conference.
This full day conference, attended by 300 local high school students,
was organized by the students in the Free the Children Club at Barrie
North Collegiate. The conference featured two key speakers, Irshad
Manji, author of "The Trouble With Islam Today" and Craig
Kielberger founder of the Free The Children Organization. The BFTWG
was offered the opportunity to run two Fair Trade Workshops each
of which were attended by approximately 40 students. Other concurrent
workshops were led by Engineers Without Borders and the Stephen
Lewis Foundation.
- May 26th, Lil' Critters children play area, Byrne
Drive. A fund raising event was supported with a Fair Trade information
table and Fair Trade coffee.
- July 21st, Zehrs Market, 472 Bayfield Street,
Barrie, Ontario. Free cups of Kicking Horse, Kick Ass Coffee were
served from 8:30 am till noon. Lots of Fair Trade talk and Fair
Trade brochures handed out.
- September 13th, Georgian College Film Night,
"The Illusionist" Free cups of Kicking Horse, Kick Ass
Coffee served and Fair Trade brochures handed out from 6:30 pm till
9:00 pm.
- September, 22nd, MacLaren Art Centre Coffee Demo.
The Radio Café in the MacLaren Art Centre serves Fair Trade
coffee year round. On September 22nd, the café gave away free
cups of Mountain View Estates Fair Trade coffee. The BFTWG supported
the event with brochures, posters and lots of Fair Trade talk.
- October, 13th, Development and Peace Workshop
at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Participants are served Fair Trade
coffee and Fair Trade information table provided.
- October 25th, Saint Joan of Arc Secondary School.
Fair Trade coffee and information table is provided during the evening
of parent, teacher interviews.
- October 26th, Barrie North Collegiate Coffee
House. Sarah Hoedlmoser who heads the local chapter of Free The
Children promotes Fair Trade with brewed coffee, posters and brochures.
- October 27th, Timothy's Coffee, Georgian Mall.
In the centre of the busy mall concourse, in front of Timothy's,
posters and brochures promote Fair Trade. To attract greater attention,
Timothy's brews two different blends of Fair Trade coffee and offers
them at a 25% discount.
- November 3rd, Barrie Folk Festival, Georgian
College. The BFTWG provided an information table, and free cups
of Kicking Horse Fair Trade coffee throughout this full day concert.
In addition a second Fair Trade table selling a variety of coffees
and chocolate was provided by John Abraham of Newmarket.
- November 4th, Huronia Symphony, Fischer Auditorium.
The BFTWG provided an information table and free cups of Kicking
Horse Fair Trade coffee. Approximately 200 individuals attended
the concert.
- November 8th, Georgian College Film Night. Free
cups of Kicking Horse, Kick Ass Coffee served and Fair Trade brochures
handed out from 6:30 pm till 9:00 pm.
- November 15th, Georgian College Film Night.
Free cups of Kicking Horse, Kick Ass Coffee served and Fair Trade brochures handed out from 6:30 pm till 9:00 pm.
- November 24th and 25th, Just Gifts Fair. St
Mary's Catholic Church, 65 Amelia Street, Barrie. This two day event
featured the sale of a large variety of Ten Thousand Villages Crafts
combined with the sale of Fair Trade, coffee, chocolate, tea and
other products.
- December 1st, Zehrs, Bayfield St. President's
Choice Fair Trade brand launch. The Loblaws group of companies has
introduced a President's Choice brand of Fair Trade Coffees that
are reasonably priced. Cups of Fair Trade coffee were served from
8 am till noon.
- December 8th, Nutrition Plus Coffee Demo.
Level Ground Peruvian Fair Trade coffee was served in the store
at 42 Maple St. from 9:30 am till 1 pm.
- December 13th, York University Campus
at Georgian College. Social Justice Conference, 9 am to 2:30 pm.
The conference was supported with free cups of Fair Trade coffee,
an information table and a talk on Fair Trade by Bob Jowett of the
BFTWG.
- December 16th, Huronia Symphony Christmas
Concert. Over 100 cups of Timothy's Fair Trade coffee served to
concert goers and orchestra members between 6 and 9:30 pm.
